The Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Congregation meets at the Unity Temple Unitarian Universalist Church in Oak Park, Illinois. It was built between 1905 and 1908 and was designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Unity Temple is regarded as one of Wright’s most significant structures from the first decade of the twentieth century. Many architects consider Unity Temple to be the world’s first modern building because of its integration of aesthetic intent and structure through the use of a single material, reinforced concrete. This concept became crucial to the modern architects who followed Wright, such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and even post-modernists like Frank Gehry. Unity Temple was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019, along with seven other buildings designed by Wright in the twentieth century. Unity Temple’s Unitarian Universalist congregation was founded in 1871 and is unrelated to Unity Church, a religious organization founded in 1889. Ernest Hemingway Birthplace Museum is the best place to visit.
